Google’s November Core Update: Six Insights from Millions of Searches

Real-time data from millions of search queries illustrates how the Google Update has affected AI Overviews and organic search.

Overlap Between Organic And AIO Citations

The overlap between the websites listed in AIO and the organic search results is one of the most intriguing tendencies that has persisted this month. When this change was initially seen in September, it was particularly apparent in the top 10 organic search results. High-ranking organic material is more likely to receive an AIO citation. This pattern implies that AIO citations are becoming more and more in line with Google’s organic search algorithm.

Since Google has not remarked on this trend, it is only possible to conjecture as to how it is coordinating organic SERPs with AIO. It’s possible that AIO is basing its strategy on organic search results, which are becoming more and more in line with the topicality of search queries.

A method of ranking websites that closely combines Google’s organic search ranking with an AI-based search interface is described in Google’s information gain patent. That type of parallelism between AI Search and naturally ranked results is consistent with the tendencies that BrightEdge observed.

Shopping Queries Ranked Differently

Shopping-related inquiries do not exhibit the trend of overlap between organic and AIO SERPs.

However, this pattern does not apply to shopping inquiries. AIO results and organic shopping SERPs are becoming more and more disjointed and moving in distinct ways. According to BrightEdge’s interpretation of the data, the growing discrepancy between organic and AIO for shopping inquiries can be attributed to extra supporting results in AIO.

The Google algorithm tweak won’t be completed for another two weeks or so. The trending search results, however, provide a clue as to what’s happening beneath the surface thanks to BrightEdge’s Generative Parser technology.

Downward Trends In Overlap

According to BrightEdge, the volatility of the ranking overlap between organic and AIO first increased somewhat (+2.3%) before November 8th, but then began to decline (-3.7%) over the next two days, and the decline persisted as the update was released.

Increased Volatility in Overlap

The instability between organic search results and AIO started to sharply increase once the upgrade was released. A redistribution pattern is implied by the changes, according to BrightEdge. This could, in my opinion, be a reflection of shifts in both organic and AIO ranks, which should eventually level out. A significant degree of volatility is indicated by the extent of fluctuations at the lowest ranking levels (positions 21–30).

Industry Specific Changes

It is important to emphasize that the data reported by BrightEdge’s Generative Parser reflects real-time changes over millions of search results, which shows how much the search results have changed. BrightEdge then examines particular businesses and is now observing noteworthy changes in queries relating to education and e-commerce.

Patterns In How AIO Cites Content

The patterns of volatility provide a first idea of the types of searches that Google is prioritizing in this upgrade. Once more, these are real-time results that could alter when additional features of the upgrade are released.
