Web Guide: New AI Search Test of Google

Web Guide

Google creates Web Guide, an AI experiment in grouping search results into topics. The best is now available in search labs.

The search engine turned on Web Guide, an experimental feature of the Search Labs stage of Google, which focuses on rearranging search results pages with the help of AI.

This is intended to help you find information by categorizing related links based on your search preferences.

What Is Web Guide?

Web Guide replaces the traditional interface of a search result list with clusters. The groupings have varied foci for your query, and it is easier to delve more into the provided regions.
According to Austin Wu, Google’s Group Product Manager in Search, WG employs a form of Gemini to understand what you’re asking and what web content is relevant to your inquiry. This allows it to return pages that would otherwise be difficult to find with the general search.

The mechanism of action: How It Works

WG builds on the common fan-out approach to queries behind the scenes.

Unlike a single search, it makes several related queries simultaneously. Then it runs those down, categorizes them, and sorts through the results according to your search intention.

Doing this provides you with a more general picture of a topic, allowing you to learn without having to narrow your search manually.

How To Try It

Users who have decided to use the Web Guide can find it in Search Labs. To get there, simply click the Web tab in Search and then switch to standard results as needed.

With user feedback, Google will gradually test the outcomes of AI result categorization in the All tab and other Search components.

The Difference: Web Guide and AI Mode. One key difference between WG and AI Mode lies in their superiority. Web Guide is superior to AI Mode in all its facets, which is why it differs in this respect.

WG and AI Mode are both driven by Google Gemini model and other technologies (including query fan-out), but are used in Search to different purposes.

Concisely, Web Guide deals with how results are displayed, whereas AI Mode alters how answers are produced and given.

Looking Ahead

Web Guide indicates Google’s further move towards abandoning the 10 blue links concept. It is a continuation of such features as AI Overviews and the AI Mode that are supposed to render the searching process more dynamic.

Since WG remains a Labs feature, it is yet to be determined whether people will like it or not. The process that Google is pursuing is a gradual rollout to observe its impact on the user experience.
